Lions superstar Simon Black might be one of the most decorated players in AFL history, but Senior Coach Michael Voss can’t help but think that his fellow Brownlow Medallists’ phenomenal career is still largely undervalued.

Speaking exclusively with LIONS TV during the second instalment of his 2012 Season Wrap, Voss said Black was an “absolute champion” of the game.

“Is there such a thing as being unheralded with [his] achievements and milestones?” Voss questioned.

“I don’t know whether it’s possible, but for a long time maybe the players around him were getting all the acknowledgements.”

Voss’ tributes flowed as he took a look back at Black’s 300th milestone match against Geelong in Round 5 at the Gabba.

Black also reached a league of his own that night, becoming the first - and only - player in 116 years of VFL/AFL history to have won a Brownlow Medal, played in a Premiership, won a Norm Smith Medal, and played 300 games.

Voss said he felt privileged to have seen one of the truly great players ply his trade up close.

“There aren’t many games I’ve missed of Blacky’s - I’ve pretty much been involved in 265 of those games as either a player or coach,” Voss said.

“So I’ve had first-hand knowledge of Blacky’s career.”

From a 15-year veteran to an AFL debutant - Voss also acknowledged mature-age recruit Dayne Zorko’s “fantastic” contribution to the Club in 2012.

“He was one of the players that came in and really elevated us as a footy team,” Voss said.

“The only other first-year player to do that since my time at the Club is Daniel Rich. He came in and won the Rising Star [in 2009] and immediately made us better as a team.”
