Backline coach Murray Davis said the Lions must capitalise on their chances in front of goal if they are to become a force in the competition this year.
In the last quarter against the Bombers on the weekend the Lions had double the amount of inside 50s but only kicked two goals.
“Lots to take out of it, we certainly weren’t at our best,” Davis told lions.com.au.
“Essendon’s pressure was really good early and we weren’t able to capitalize early in front of goal.
“Even as the game wore on, we still had our chances and we’ve spoken about that, you have to take them in this competition.
“It’s too tight not to be able to take your chances when you have your turn.”
The team have been quick to move on from the weekend’s loss to focus on Collingwood in just two days’ time.
Davis has said the team’s preparation has not been affected by the tight turnaround and the players are looking forward to the Thursday night clash.
“It’s really about the recovery and getting back to playing the footy we know we can play,” he said.
Many have never played on a Thursday or Friday night. The coaches and senior players will help temper the excitement of such a big game.
“It’s really just about shared experiences,” Davis said.
“We get around them and try to educate those who have not experienced it before and embrace it and look forward to it.”
