Ahead of the tonight's big event, lions.com.au is throwing back to a few favourite Brownlow snaps from the past:

The Club won it's first Brownlow Medal in 1931 when Fitzroy's Hayden Bunton polled 26 votes. Bunton received the honour three times while at Fitzroy and stands alongside five other Fitzroy legends; Wilfred Smallhorn, Dinny Ryan, Allan Ruthven, Kevin Murray and Bernie Quinlan, who were honoured by the medal. 1996

Michael Voss became the first Brisbane player to receive a Brownlow in 1996. In what was the Bears' final season before its merger with Fitzroy, he polled 21 votes to claim the medal.

2001

Fast-forward five years to 2001. The Brisbane Lions were set to take on Essendon in the AFL Grand Final only a few days later.

A dominant season for the Lions shone a light on Jason Akermanis. The Lions superstar polled 23 Brownlow votes to receive the league's most prestigious award. Lions Captain Voss received 19 votes to finish third runner-up for the medal.

2002

A period of dominance was well and truly underway for the Lions by 2002. The reigning premiers were set to take on Collingwood only a few days later when Simon Black won the Brownlow, tallying 25 votes.

In 2003, the Lions weren't so lucky. Voss was the highest polling Lion finishing equal seventh with 19 Brownlow votes.

2009

A number of spectacular seasons saw Black named the Brownlow runner up in 2007 and 2008.

The following year he was tipped a hot contender for the medal, once again. Alongside Blacky, Lions Captain Jonathan Brown was up for the award. Brown had just completed one of his best seasons since being drafted the Lions, named the Club's leading goal-kicker, most professional player and Members' Player of the Year and Club Champion for his third consecutive year.

The two superstars received a total of 19 votes each for the medal, finishing equal fourth.

2017

Since 2009 only two Lions players have finished in the Brownlow's top ten votes tally. Former Captain Tom Rockliff was recognised as fifth runner-up in 2013.

Last year, Dayne Beams finished 9th in the overall votes tally.
