The Captains of the 17 other AFL sides don’t seem to think the Brisbane Lions will pose too much of a threat to the 2014 AFL Premiership.
As is the case each year, all 18 club Captains were asked a variety of questions relating to the upcoming season, with responses kept anonymous for obvious reasons.
The results, revealed by the AFL on Wednesday, indicated that there wasn’t a whole lot of love for the Lions.
It probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering the Club hasn’t participated in the AFL Finals since 2009.
When surveyed on which seven other clubs could make this year’s top eight, the Captain’s listed Fremantle (17), Hawthorn (17), Sydney (17), and Geelong (16) as their overwhelming favourites.
Collingwood (12), West Coast (11), North Melbourne (9), Richmond (9), Essendon (7), Port Adelaide (7), Adelaide (2), and Carlton (2) were also nominated.
But in terms of who will play off in the 2014 AFL Grand Final, it was narrowed down to just three – Hawthorn, Sydney and Fremantle.
Among other responses, Scott Pendlebury (4) was favoured to win this year’s Brownlow Medal ahead of Gary Ablett (3) and Patrick Dangerfield (3), while the Captain’s couldn’t split Travis Cloke (5) and Josh Kennedy (5) as the potential Coleman Medallists.
The Lions weren’t forgotten altogether, however, with draftee James Aish among the fancies for the Rising Star Award.
Aish received two votes, along with Jack Billings and Joe Daniher, to rank equal second behind much-hyped Gold Coast teenager Jack Martin (7 votes).
