Our next opposition, the West Coast Eagles, were shocked by a fast-finishing Collingwood Magpies in Round 18.
While the Magpies started strongly, the Eagles were in control for most of the match at the Etihad Stadium, leading at every change and holding onto a handy 18-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Injuries to Darcy Moore and Travis Varcoe left Collingwood with just two men on the bench for the whole last quarter.
The Magpies dug deep and rattled off five unanswered goals to seal a stunning victory, with the final score 13.15 (93) to 13.7 (85).
In his 200th match, key forward Josh Kennedy was in excellent touch for the Eagles, booting six goals in a dominant display.
Kennedy was supported well by Shannon Hurn and Dom Sheed, who collected 29 and 26 touches each.
Eagles Coach Adam Simpson was shattered after the match, blaming his side’s inability to compete around the contest in the last quarter as the main reason for the loss.
"Your will to win, in the end, will win you some games," Simpson said.
"Unfortunately, we didn't match Collingwood in that area. We got dominated around the ball.
“We just lost field position and momentum was hard to get back."
The results leaves the Eagles lingering in ninth place on the ladder, desperately needing a win on Sunday to keep in touch with the top eight.
