On Saturday afternoon, before the Brisbane Lions met the Western Bulldogs, Diana Urbina was finally recognised as an Australian citizen, after a six and half year journey.

Urbina, originally from Columbia, was one of 51 people who become Australian citizens before Saturday’s match.

The Lions, with community partner, Multicultural Development Australia, hosted a citizenship ceremony in the Gabba rooms for the first time.

“It brings an ingredient of excitement this time. A more cultural enrichment in Australian sports,” Urbina said.

Finally holding the citizenship certificate in her hands, alongside her husband, was a life changing moment for Urbina.

“To become Australian citizens means for us to fully embrace Australian culture. Being able to be part of the voting system. And just being able to fully engage in Australian culture,” she said.

“What a better way to complete that moment with a Lions game. So that’s been a really great moment that I’m sure I’ll never forget."

The 32-year-old had never witnessed an AFL match, but Saturday’s game will not be her last.

“It’s a fast-paced, very exciting and engaging game,” she said.

Urbina was so taken with her new sport, she’s considering strapping on some footy boots herself next season.

“I do enjoy the fast-paced sports. I wouldn’t mind at all.”
