Ahead of this Sunday's clash with the Sydney Swans, Brisbane Lions midfield coach Dale Tapping has reflected on the importance of playing strong, competitive football.

The Lions have their main session on Thursday evening ahead of Sunday's match at the SCG.

Working with the midfield, Tapping said Lions will have to improve their pressure from last week's loss, where they laid just 42 tackles.

"We are working strongly around our contest work but also our ability to transition and pattern off outside of the contest," said Tapping.

Tapping said while the Lions' work inside the contest has been good, ultimately work on the outside of the contest is where they need improvement.

"Particularly the past two weeks against Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs, we've shown a capacity inside the contest.

"We've been able to compete really strongly - that's been a positive, but I think the learning for us is the ability to react a lot quicker outside the contest.

"We've got a younger midfield, particularly when we bring the second layer of midfielders in the rotation.

"The ability to react a lot quicker and run the right patterns off ball is certainly a focus for us."
