In this week’s Vero Coaches Wrap, Danny Daly dissects Sunday’s loss to the Cats in Geelong.

Lions.com.au covers the main points below.

Areas of improvement

Goal Kicking

“It feels like a bit of déjà vu because it’s our kicking again.

“With our distance 41-50 metres we weren’t great. Again it’s the same issue we had last week. Unfortunately the boys just couldn’t get the job done again with their goal kicking. We kicked 7-14 for the game off the back of 11-17 against North Melbourne. It wasn’t ideal and what we needed against a side like Geelong who can hurt you.

“We kicked 1-5 in the first quarter – they kicked 6-2. It was 8 scoring shots to 6. There was a fairly hefty wind coming through without the grandstand at Simonds. Our boys just didn’t adjust to the conditions with our goal kicking.

“Sometimes you just can’t replicate that at The Gabba because of our grandstands here.

“The boys did have some goal kicking shots before the game and at training but on the day we couldn’t do it. Geelong also kicked 2-8 in the third quarter, so they didn’t handle the conditions for a quarter too well also.

“What we’ve got the boys doing and they did it last week. Every training session they’ll have 20 shots on goal. Whether that’s before, during our after training. In between drills we also have the players coming and kicking one or two shots whilst they’re under fatigue. It’s really important we do it under fatigue because that replicates game day as well.”

Forward half turnovers

“We were minus 34 points on the day for forward half turnovers. The AFL average is 22, Geelong had 34 and kicked 7.6 from those. We had 24 and we only kicked 2.2.

“That was a big difference in the game as well. We were very good at it last week but we fell away against Geelong.”

Shining Light

Darcy Gardiner

"I thought Darcy Gardiner was really good on the day. As a defender, his ability to spoil and tackle and harass the opposition was terrific. He had 17 possessions, 3 tackles and 3 rebound 50s. More importantly he had 5 spoils and his one on one contests were very good on the day. He was a shining light and a young player that puts a lot of work into his training."
