A RELIEVED Simon Black said he was itching to play at the Gabba for the first time in six weeks against Melbourne on Sunday after avoiding suspension earlier this week.

Black was charged by the Match Review Panel for an elbow on Western Bulldogs' tagger Liam Picken in Saturday's win at Etihad Stadium, but an early guilty plea ensured he would miss no action.

The 33-year-old has not played at the Gabba since round eight against Greater Western Sydney - missing the round 10 win over West Coast with a knee injury - and said he was eager to get back on his home turf.

"Whenever you're charged by the Match Review Panel and get off it's a relief," Black said, prior to Lions' training on Thursday morning.

"It's just one of those things. It's something I shouldn't have done. Over the years I've remained focused on what I've got to do and that's what you've got to do week in and week out.

"I haven't played at the Gabba for a few weeks so I'm looking forward to Sunday afternoon."

The usually cool Black said he was not getting frustrated by taggers and said the umpires did a good job of protecting ball winners.

After sitting out the previous two weeks with a knee injury, the Brownlow medallist said the biggest difference returning against the Bulldogs was the Lions' pressure.

"That was the really noticeable thing we did on Saturday," he said.

"We tackled really well, shut down their time and space, which we hadn't done for a fair while, especially at Etihad. That was something I really noticed.

"And we're starting to use the ball better, hit targets a bit more regularly which is kind of important."

Black said the loss of fullback Matt Maguire with an elbow injury for the next month was a blow to the 5-7 Lions, but expected the other defenders to cover his loss.

He said Demon Mitch's Clark's absence with a foot injury would help their cause.

"When somebody goes down there's an opportunity for someone else to stand up.

"Niall's (McKeever) been good, Joel Patfull's been good all year back there and whoever gets to fill Goose's (Maguire) role in the side will hopefully do a good job for us.

"Melbourne have improved a lot in the last six weeks so we're fully expecting them to be a completely different side from when we played them in round one. We're going to have to play well to beat them."
