The Brisbane Lions have appointed Chris Fagan as the Club's new Senior Coach.

Fagan joins the Club after almost a decade as Hawthorn's Head of Coaching and Development during a highly successful period for the Hawks.

The 55-year-old also spent a decade at Melbourne Football Club as General Manager of Football Operations, Assistant Coach and Reserves Coach.

A qualified teacher, Fagan was a standout during the process to select the new Senior Coach, which saw a number of high-quality candidates interviewed for the role.

The five-person coaching selection panel, led by CEO Greg Swann, made the recommendation to select Fagan to the Club's Board, which ratified the selection this morning.

The coaching selection panel also consisted of new General Manager of Football David Noble, three-time premiership winning midfielder Simon Black, former AFL Director of Coaching Peter Schwab, and senior psychologist from Mental Edge Consulting Matti Clements.

Swann said Fagan came with excellent pedigree and was exactly the person the Club needed to fill such a pivotal role.

"Chris is the perfect fit for the Brisbane Lions as we strive to regain relevance - his knowledge, experience, mentoring skills and ability to communicate are all elite," said Swann.

"The selection panel was hugely impressed with the standard of candidates interviewed throughout the process, and Chris was the standout.

"The Club is making a new start and we believe he has all the skills to take us in the new direction we want to go as a Club both on and off the field.

"He comes from a really successful environment where he has played a major role in driving high standards over an extended period of time, and we are really excited about what he can achieve with our young and talented group.”

Fagan will take up his new position immediately.
