BRISBANE LIONS Coach Justin Leppitsch will be one of 10 past and present players who will be among 16 people made AFL life members at the AFL’s Annual General Meeting in March.
Leppitsch played a total of 227 games in a magnificent 14-year career with the Lions, which included three premierships (2001-2003), a Merrett-Murray Medal (1999), and three appearances in the AFL All Australian team (1999, 2002-03).
A chronic back injury forced Leppitsch into retirement early in 2006, but the Club was determined not to lose his razor-sharp football brain, and immediately installed him as Assistant Coach the following year.
Leppitsch spent three seasons at the Lions – two under Leigh Matthews and one under Michael Voss – before moving to Richmond at the end of 2009 in search of greater coaching experience.
He spent a further four seasons under Damien Hardwick at Richmond, where he developed a broader range of coaching philosophies.
Just two weeks after helping guide the Tigers to their first Finals appearance in 12 years, Leppitsch was appointed as the Lions’ new Senior Coach.
The Club congratulates Justin Leppitsch and the other new inductees who are to be appointed as AFL life members later in the year.
