MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
The AFL today announced it had reached agreement with its commercial radio broadcast partners for the next six years, covering the period 2017-2022.
The radio broadcast rights agreements will see increased coverage of the Sydney Swans / GWS Giants into New South Wales and the Brisbane Lions / Gold Coast Suns into Queensland, including regional areas, along with renewed agreements with long-time partners who have broadcast both nationally and into specific state markets in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
The AFL's non-commercial agreements with ABC Radio and the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) are still being concluded.
AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan said the AFL’s commercial radio partners would be, Triple M, Macquarie Radio, SEN, K Rock, FIVEaa and Crocmedia. This would see broadcasts of AFL matches as follows:
Capital City
Melbourne – 3AW, SEN, Triple M.
Adelaide – FIVEaa, Triple M.
Perth – 6PR, Triple M.
Sydney – 2UE, Triple M, 2SM.
Brisbane – Magic882, Triple M.
Regional
National – Crocmedia, Triple M.
Geelong – K Rock.
Gold Coast – 92.5FM.
3AW, 6PR, SEN, Triple M (Adelaide, Melbourne) will each also broadcast the grand final of the newly-formed national women’s competition.
Under the new agreements, all previous coverage by existing partners will be continued while Magic882 will broadcast all Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns’ premiership matches into Brisbane, Triple M Brisbane will broadcast all Brisbane Lions’ premiership matches into Brisbane, 92.5GoldFM will broadcast all Gold Coast Suns’ premiership matches into the Gold Coast, 2UE will broadcast all Sydney Swans and GWS Giants’ premiership matches into Sydney and Triple M Sydney will broadcast one Swans or Giants match per round into Sydney plus a Saturday night match each week. Crocmedia and Triple M have each expanded their coverage of radio station broadcasts into regional Australia.
Mr McLachlan said he was delighted that fans around Australia would be able to access their team via radio and wished to thank each of the radio broadcast partners for their commitment to Australia’s leading sporting code.
“The fans of our 18 clubs will benefit the most over the next six years, being able to listen to their team play wherever they may be listening across Australia."
Mr McLachlan said the key features of the agreement included:
- Nine matches per round during the Toyota AFL Premiership Season, and all matches in the Toyota AFL Finals Series will be broadcast into Victoria
- Increased regional coverage via Crocmedia and Southern Cross Austereo
- Every match featuring an AFL club from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales to be broadcast into their respective states
- All Toyota AFL Finals Series matches (including the Toyota AFL Grand Final) to be broadcast nationally
In Melbourne, Triple M and 3AW are to broadcast a minimum of four matches per regular round across Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. They will have first choice on matches in the Saturday afternoon and Saturday night timeslots and also have a right to broadcast two additional matches (Saturday twilight and the conclusion of Sunday twilight).
SEN are to broadcast a minimum of six matches per regular round in Melbourne across Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday twilight, Saturday night, Sunday early and Sunday twilight.
“We are very pleased that we’ve been able to achieve a strong outcome for the ongoing financial security of the game and our clubs with the commercial value of our rights with AM and FM licences,” he said.
