The loss of two-time Merrett-Murray Medallist Joel Patfull to the GWS Giants over the off-season will no doubt leave a hole in the Brisbane Lions’ defence next season.

The ever-reliable Patfull rarely got beaten in one-on-one contests, and was a clear leader for intercept marks at the Club.

His versatility also proved valuable, as he could effectively play on both talls and smalls as required.

But while Patfull will certainly be missed, up-and-coming defender Justin Clarke believes the Lions have enough options down back to cover his loss.

“Obviously losing such a key influence down back such as Joel (Patfull) was, you need to be able to step up,” Clarke told lions.com.au.

“We’ve got some really good talent coming up. Guys like myself, Dizzy (Darcy Gardiner), and Dan McStay all have to take that step up in leadership.”

In addition to developing defenders Clarke, Gardiner, and McStay, the Lions also have some experienced heads down back in the form of Daniel Merrett and Matt Maguire – not to mention ‘swingmen’ Brent Staker and Luke McGuane who can play defensive roles at a pinch.

Clarke said that Maguire, in particular, has been valuable in helping teach him the finer details of becoming a backman.

“I love playing with ‘Goose’. You know exactly what you’re going to get out of him. Having such a young backline, his leadership really helps us out,” he said.

After matching up against some of the competition’s heavyweight key forwards in 2014, Clarke hopes to once again be entrusted with the role next season.

“I really enjoy the challenge of playing on the best forward, but whatever the team requires of me, I’m happy to play that role. I’ll just be trying to get my name on the team sheet every week and going from there,” Clarke said.

“Some weeks Goose or Rog will get those types of players, but other weeks might suit me a bit better.
