Lions Captain Jonathan Brown has said that new deputy Mark Harvey has been a fantastic addition to the Club’s coaching staff.

Harvey, who joined the Club in November following a four-year stint as Fremantle’s Senior Coach, has been working with the team’s forward line over a gruelling and high-intensity pre-season so far.

He is quickly becoming a cult figure at the Lions’ summer training venue, Giffin Park, conspicuous on the field by his direct and uncompromising coaching style.

Brown, who is considerably more experienced than the majority of his fellow forwards, said that the young players were responding very well to Harvey’s approach.

“Harvs is very experienced and he’s pretty old-school,” Brown said.

“He sees the game very well and the players have all really enjoyed working underneath him.”

“We’ve got a very young key position group here and I think he’ll be fantastic for them.”

Harvey is undoubtedly one of the most experienced brains in the business, with a football career spanning over almost 30 years.

He played 207 games with Essendon, where he was well known for his versatility around the ground and his aggressive style of play.

He then remained at Essendon as an Assistant Coach for eight years, before moving to Perth to take up an Assistant’s role under Chris Connolly, who he eventually succeeded as Senior Coach.

Brown said that Harvey’s extensive experience made him the perfect senior assistant to Michael Voss.

“Bringing that experience in match day and throughout the week is going to be invaluable,” Brown said.
