Brisbane Lions NEAFL side’s preparation has focused on defence this week; as they aim for a ninth straight win against Canberra on Saturday.
Coach Mitch Hahn says the atmosphere at training has been upbeat and positive after their Round 17 victory over Redland at the Gabba.
“It was our first opportunity to play at the Gabba so we really wanted to put on a show for our supporters who haven’t been able to see us as much,” Hahn said.
The Lions set the pace in the first quarter against Redland, kicking eight goals. But the Bombers came back and kicked nine in the final stanza.
“It became a bit of a shootout in the end which we were trying to avoid,” Hahn said.
Senior players including Jarrad Jansen, Liam Dawson, Blake Grewar and Claye Beams lifted in the last quarter to ensure a Lions victory.
Heading into the side’s Canberra clash this weekend, Hahn wants the responsibility shared amongst his 22 men.
“Our Senior players stepped up towards the end there but all in all we’re looking for 22 contributors every week so against Canberra this week that’s what we’ll be focusing on,” Hahn said.
Attacking power has not been a worry for the Lions this season; against Redland alone they kicked 20 goals. Training this week has focused on defence and restricting goal opportunities for their opponent.
“Our ability to be able to restrict the opposition to score and really focusing on our defence and along with that comes our contested footy. We know that the way that we’re moving the ball is good enough,” Hahn said.
The side will brace for much cooler temperatures in Canberra on Saturday. This week the temperature has dipped below zero degrees in the nation’s capital.
“I think a few of the boys will struggle with the conditions but again, it’s great for our guys to be able to adapt to this,” Hahn said.
“They’ve got to get used to playing in colder conditions, as Melbourne is colder at this time of year.”
