There will be a strong Brisbane Lions presence in the Women’s All-Stars match at Metricon Stadium on Saturday with our very own Administration Support Officer Emma Zielke named Captain of the Lions team.
The curtain raiser for the Gold Coast Sun’s Round 2 match against St Kilda, will showcase Queensland’s elite female footballers and provides the players an opportunity to show their skills in a stage of the selection process for the AFL Women’s Draft.
The two teams, the Lions and the Suns, comprise players from the state’s new Women’s Talent Academy, the 2015 Youth Girls Academy and players hand-picked from regional leagues.
Zielke said she was excited for the opportunity to represent some of Queensland’s best.
“They’ve got a fair few fast girls, so it’s going to be a fast paced game. We’ve got a much taller team, but bigger bodies.
“I think it’s going to make for an interesting contest – the sides are pretty different.”
Lions Academy Coach Scott Borlace has been named to Coach the Lions team and is excited by the opportunity for the girls put their skills on show.
“It’s a great opportunity for the girls to show their skills to a crowd before an AFL match."
"Women's AFL is one of the fastest growing segments of our sport, so to be involved with that as a Coach is exciting.”
"I hope I can help them to get the results they want.”
AFL Queensland Female High Performance Manager, Craig Starcevich, is keen for local fans to get behind Queensland’s best.
“Having this game as a curtain raiser to an AFL game is a fantastic opportunity to showcase female football,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to see that women do play football at a high level and that Queensland has a great pool of talent.”
Teams will play in Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast SUNS guernseys. The full teams can be seen here.
