No. 23 has become over a number of years one of the most iconic playing numbers in world sport.

It has been worn by basketballer Michael Jordan and cricketer Shane Warne, as well as AFL players including Lance Franklin, Dermott Brereton, Andrew McLeod and the Lions’ own Justin Leppitsch.

Its legacy in the AFL is remarkable, having been worn by two Brownlow Medallists, two Norm Smith Medallists and nine Coleman Medallists.  Andrew McLeod wore it for 340 games with the Adelaide Crows.

Another star in the making, Josh Schache, will wear the No. 23 to honour his late father Laurence, who played for the Brisbane Bears between 1991-92.

“It’s very special. I’m very humbled to get the number,” Josh said upon receiving his guernsey.
