SIMON BLACK has paid tribute to coach Michael Voss for helping Brisbane Lions to their first finals series since 2004 after their tight eight-point win over the Swans on Saturday night at the SCG.

The victory earned the Lions a home elimination final against the Blues next week and Black says Voss deserves much of the credit for injecting extra confidence into the players.

"Vossy’s style is really positive – a lot of the younger guys get a real kick out of him. He doesn’t look for the negatives,” Black said after the game.

"He’s the sort of guy that you get a real sense he’s proud of the group. And you get a real kick out of it as a player.

"A lot of our younger guys are playing better footy this year because he’s instilled that confidence in them. Hopefully it lasts for a while."

Voss, a Lions’ favourite son and a three-time premiership captain, will have his first taste of finals as a senior AFL coach at what should be a packed Gabba against Carlton.

However, while the Lions got what they wanted from their trip to Sydney, Black wants to see a more ruthless approach in the finals.

They allowed the Swans to roar back into the contest in the third quarter with a seven-minute spell of five unanswered goals. It was a worrying sign heading into the finals.

"All year we haven’t played a four quarter effort, we’ve been a bit patchy. Our good is pretty good but we allow sides to kick half a dozen goals either catch us up or bridge a big gap," Black said.

The 30-year-old midfielder picked up 24 possessions and a goal on Saturday night but he said the team had to lift another notch next week, particularly with their consistency.

"From here on in we need to be better in that area. We need to be more consistent throughout patches of the game. It kills us," he said.

"But tonight was great preparation for a final."
