As testament to his incredible value to the Brisbane Lions, Daniel Rich is paid the ultimate compliment each weekend by having the opposition’s best tagger trying to nullify his influence on the contest.
Rich has received plenty of attention over the past month in particular.
In fact, the 2009 Rising Star has averaged 16.75 disposals per game and kicked just one goal from his past four games.
His 14-disposal performance against Port Adelaide last Sunday prompted AFL Hall of Famer Mark Ricciuto to suggest that Rich could perhaps turn the tables by playing a tagging role himself.
“He can start tagging other players,” Ricciuto told The Courier Mail.
"You have to look at what you can do for the team. Maybe on the weekend he could have gone to Travis Boak, who didn't have a tag, and make sure he doesn't get any clearances.”
Ricciuto also that Rich could benefit from learning more about how taggers operate.
“Obviously he is a very good player which is why sides tag him,” Ricciuto said.
“At training he needs Andrew Raines tagging him in competitive drills.
“He should pick up a phone and call Cameron Ling and pick his brains, ask him what the best players did to make his job harder.”
Port tagger Kane Cornes might have kept Rich relatively quiet on Sunday, but he was still able to contribute three goal assists, and limit Cornes himself to just 20 touches – which was almost eight below his 2013 season average.
"What we're after is to be able to make sure that whoever he plays against and whoever he takes, he wins his battle, and that's a tick,” Lions Senior Coach Michael Voss said.
“From our point of view, I thought he was good in that regard and took his battle.
“It was pretty neutral in the end. It was neither here nor there for us.”
Voss has no immediate plans to change Rich’s on-field role, and has every confidence that his gun midfielder will overcome this latest challenge.
“In the end, I'm a very big believer that coaches can't save you,'' Voss said.
“They are there to try and help where they can but we're not here to save, so it comes down to his ability to be able to work.”
