It was GWS Giants' first season in the AFL.

The Giants were coming off the back of their first-ever win one week earlier against fellow expansion side, the Gold Coast Suns.

It was Round 8 2012, the first time the Lions would face off against the Giants and they were hell-bent on running riot over the new team.

The game was effectively over at quarter time after the Lions kicked seven goals to one.

The Lions led by 46 points at half-time and 63 points by the final break as skipper Jonathan Brown began to assert his dominance.

It was the first time Lions legend and new Giants recruit Luke Power faced off against his former club and he was kept quiet in his new colours with 16 disposals.

Dan Merrett had a monster performance for the Lions with his positional move up forward paying dividends on the day. 

Merrett kicked two goals within the first two minutes. His stellar form continued throughout the game, totalling a career-best seven goals by full time.  

By the time the final siren sounded, the Lions had convincingly run away with the four points, recording a 92-point victory at the Gabba.
