Emma Zielke has been named Captain of the Brisbane Lions AFLW side ahead of the 2020 season. Zielke, a foundation eight member of the Lions team, captained the side in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, when they played in consecutive AFLW Grand Finals.
The 31-year-old was voted in by her teammates and was informed before training last night.
“I’m proud and honoured to be Captain of the Club I love and have been a part of for the past four years,” Zielke said.
“I’m excited to see what this group can do in 2020.”
Joining her for the first time in the role of Vice-Captain is Sharni Webb, also an inaugural player and member of last year’s leadership group.
Breanna Koenen has been elevated to the leadership group for the first time in her career and will be joined by Kate Lutkins and Emily Bates.
All five women in the leadership group have been with the Lions AFLW side since it’s introduction in 2016.
Lions CEO Breeanna Brock congratulated the group and commended their commitment and dedication to the Club.
“What’s exciting is the five women in our leadership group have been with us since day one,” Brock said.
“They are passionate about the Club and the future we are moulding.
“Craig Starcevich and I have watched them all grow as leaders over the past four years and we look forward to what they will bring in 2020.”
The Lions AFLW side will have their last session for 2019 on Saturday 21 December, before returning on Thursday 2 January.
