Dayne Zorko will lead the Brisbane Lions in 2020 after he was voted in by his teammates for a second consecutive season. The Lions Board members endorsed the decision on Monday evening.
In his first year as Captain, Zorko led the Lions to their first AFL Finals Series in a decade.
“I am honoured to be able to continue to lead this maturing group,” Zorko said.
Harris Andrews will serve alongside Zorko as Vice-Captain, with Darcy Gardiner, Stefan Martin, Lachie Neale, Ryan Lester and Jarrod Berry again elected into the leadership group.
Jarryd Lyons and Hugh McCluggage are new additions to the group in 2020, after the pair were voted in by their teammates.
Allen Christensen decided to step down from his position in the leadership group, in order to focus on his rehabilitation from minor back surgery late last year.
This is the first time both Lyons and McCluggage have been part of an AFL leadership group.
“I’ve been working on my leadership skills over the last couple of years, so it’s great to have that recognition and trust from the group,” Lyons said.
Lyons had a breakout year in 2019, after arriving at the Club in late 2018 as a delisted free agent. He averaged 24 disposals and six tackles per game and finished fourth overall in the 2019 Club Champion votes.
In 2020 McCluggage will enter his fourth season at the Lions after arriving at the Club with Pick No. 3 at the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.
“It is a privilege to be recognised by your peers as someone who is trusted to help lead the players during an exciting period of time for our Club,” McCluggage said.
General Manager of Football David Noble congratulated the nine men selected and said they had been exemplary leaders on and off the field.
“Each of the nine leaders offer something different to the group, which is what makes them stronger as a unit,” Noble said.
“Hugh and Jarryd are fantastic additions and have already displayed strong leadership by their actions on field.
“We look forward to seeing what this group will achieve in 2020."
