Former Broadbeach product Dayne Zorko might be one of four Brisbane Lions players originally recruited from the Gold Coast – along with Luke McGuane (Broadbeach), Daniel Merrett (Southport) and Andrew Raines (Southport) – but he’ll be doing everything in his power to ensure the QClash Cup returns to its rightful place at the Gabba on Saturday evening.
Zorko was traded to the Lions from the Suns at the end of 2011, and has since gone on to become a quality AFL player, and fan favourite, in Brisbane.
He is now looking forward to lining up against a much-improved Gold Coast side, who rightfully enter QClash 7 as favourites for the first time.
“They’re a very classy outfit, young and full of energy. They’re back on their home ground and won’t want to lose another QClash, but we’ll be trying to assert our dominance as the number one team in Queensland,” Zorko told the Fancast on LIONS TV.
“It’s obviously a pretty important game for the Club. Being 0-2 is not a fantastic start, but hopefully we can go down the Gold Coast and get a win.”
The 2014 season is just two games old, but Zorko looks to be in career-best form having averaged 29 disposals since being afforded a more regular midfield role.
He credits a diligent pre-season program for being able to play more minutes in the centre.
“The pre-season was pretty important,” he said.
“My first pre-season was interrupted (through injury) and my second probably wasn’t that flash.
“But I now feel like I have a sizeable enough engine to play in the midfield. I’ve been fortunate to spend a bit more time in there.”
