Lions finalise Grand Final panel
Alastair Lynch, Chris Johnson and Robert Walls will headline the Lions' Grand Final Eve Gala Auction.
The Go Wild Go Lions Gala Auction - proudly supported by Platinum Partner Hyundai - will be held at Etihad Stadium on Friday 30 September, featuring a sumptuous three-course meal, free-flowing drinks, terrific bargains and exceptional entertainment.
But one of the highlights will certainly be a comprehensive preview of the next day’s ‘biggest game of the year’ from a star-studded line-up of football experts (and former Club greats) who know what it takes to achieve the ultimate success.
The panel will consist of three-time Lions premiership team-mates Alastair Lynch and Chris Johnson together with three-time Premiership player and Premiership coach Robert Walls - who will certainly have plenty of stories to share.
ALASTAIR LYNCH
Lynch - one of only two players in history to have represented Fitzroy, the Bears and the Brisbane Lions - was a critical member of the Lions’ historic hat-trick of Premierships from 2001-03.
He holds the merged Club’s record for most Finals goals (65), most goals in a Final (7 v Adelaide in the 2002 Qualifying Final) and most goals in a Finals Series (16 in both 2002 and 2004).
The final match of his 306-game career was in the 2004 Grand Final when the Lions’ attempt to win four Premierships in a row was thwarted by Port Adelaide.
CHRIS JOHNSON
The last Fitzroy player standing in the AFL, Chris Johnson proved an important figure in the Brisbane Lions’ merger.
He transitioned from a small forward in his early days into the League’s premiere attacking defender who helped the Lions to three Premierships from four straight Grand Final appearances.
He revolutionised the role of the small defender in the AFL before hanging up the boots at the end of 2007.
ROBERT WALLS
During his playing days with Carlton, Walls played in three Premierships (1968, 1970 and 1972) and was also part of two losing Grand Finals with the Blues (1969 and 1973).
He later moved to the Lions where he played 41 matches in three seasons, and immediately took over the role as Fitzroy Senior Coach after retiring as a player at the end of 1980.
He guided Fitzroy during one of the Club’s most successful periods in recent memory, before moving back to Carlton where he coached the Blues to a Grand Final in his first season at the helm (in 1986) and a Premiership the following year.
Walls later led the Brisbane Bears to their first ever Finals appearance.
