In this week’s 'Throwback Thursday', we throwback to 2001, and recall the famous words of Leigh Matthews:
“If it bleeds, we can kill it. And we reckon Essendon can bleed.”
The triple-premiership coach issued this warning ahead of the Lions' Round 10 clash with the reigning premiers.
Essendon entered the match as favourites, having won eight of their first nine matches of the season and riding high after a 65-point win over the Hawks. By half-time, however, they had kicked only two goals.
The Lions, by contrast, had a five-goal lead at half time, and went on to claim their biggest scalp of the season in front of more than 36,000 fans at the Gabba.
This victory over the 2000 premiers signalled the start of the ascendency of the Lions.
