DELIGHTED coach Michael Voss says the Brisbane Lions must improve, but has not ruled out a run at the top eight.

The Lions made it three wins from their past four games with a 61-point belting of Melbourne at the Gabba on Sunday and are now in a log-jam of teams just one win outside the top eight.

Voss said the Lions had done wonderfully well to work back into the season after being stranded at 3-6 following a disappointing round nine loss against North Melbourne.

"I'll never discount being good enough to make the eight," Voss said.

"We put ourselves in that mix and there's a fairly large group hovering in that area, and I guess if there's such a thing as a carrot, it's dangling right out in front of us.

"If that's what motivates the guys to do what they need to do on a daily basis, then good, [but] it's certainly not something we focus a hell of a lot of energy on."

Captain Jonathan Brown said the upset round 10 win over West Coast had given the team's younger players the belief they could compete against class opposition.

He said they were still looking short-term though.

"As players, we're just trying to improve week by week," Brown said.

"Everyone is talking that we've put ourselves in contention but that's not our focus as a group. We know we're a bit off the top sides as we saw against Hawthorn (in round 12), but it's a great opportunity to test ourselves against Sydney and the boys are really looking forward to that challenge, we go in with some good form."

Voss said the Lions were still evolving and had a "hell of a lot of work to do".

Despite the comfortable nature of the win, the Lions trailed Melbourne 54-50 in the inside 50 count and were just one better in clearances (35-34).

"I don't walk away 100 per cent happy with the game," Voss said.

"I think there was some things we could have taken off Melbourne and we didn't. They competed really hard, you cannot take that away from them, they are having a crack.

"I thought we didn't think through things as much as we could have. That's an area we need to ... continue to improve on."

Voss praised midfielder-turned-defender Ryan Harwood after his career-high 29 disposals, saying his form had allowed the Lions to move three-goal forward Ash McGrath into the front half.
