The Brisbane Lions Reserves had an impressive start to their pre-season campaign last Friday night after defeating Southport by 20 points in a highly entertaining QAFL practice match at Coorparoo.

The quarter-by-quarter match report from the QAFL website read as follows:

First Quarter - Brisbane 4.1 (25) led Southport 3.0 (18)

The Lions kicked the first four goals and settled best in the wet conditions - receiving drive from Troy Selwood through the middle and Ryan Harwood and Josh Dyson outside.

Brisbane started the game with goals from Southport top-up players Brenton Male and David Kovacevic, followed by clever goals from Dyson and Harwood.

Southport found their feet and former Oakleigh Charger Justin Van Unen kicked their first major followed by two from Ben Merrett, who was getting on top across half forward

Former Richmond big man Dean Putt was giving first use of the ball to the Sharks.

Half Time: Brisbane 7.3 (45) led Southport 3.2 (20)

It was a real arm-wrestle for the first 10 minutes with former Zillmere star Matthew Payne and Danny Wise in everything for the Sharks - Merrett was well held and the Sharks had trouble locking the ball inside forward 50.

The Lions rebounded late with goals from Dyson, Donald Barry and Claye Beams to take a 25-point lead into halftime.

Third Quarter: Brisbane 9.4 (58) led Southport 6.3 (39)

Payne was outstanding at stoppages and singlehandedly lifted Southport’s intensity. O’Brien mopped up and gave a lot of drive across half back

Selwood and Ash McGrath were both defending well and giving Brisbane good rebound into attack while Scalzo kicked two goals for the quarter and looked a very handy left sided player.

Putt started getting the ball around the ground and Connor Petterson showed his class with a right foot snap

Jesse O’Brien and Southport top-up player Rory Oates were the goalkickers for the Lions.

Fourth Quarter: Brisbane 9.7 (61) d Southport 6.5 (41)

The last quarter went from half backline to half backline with neither side kicking a goal.

The match was the first offcial hitout for a number of the Club's young recruits as well as senior players Troy Selwood and Ash McGrath.

Selwood, Harwood, Dyson and Cornelius were among the better players for the Lions while International recruits Niall McKeever and Donald Barry showed plenty in their first official match with the Club.

Harwood led the Lions in possessions with 24 while Selwood finished with 23 and McGrath had 20.

Of the listed Lions players, Josh Dyson was the team's only multiple goal-scorer with two majors while Barry, Claye Beams, Harwood and Jesse O'Brien each booted one. The Lions were also well served by the top-up players provided to them by Southport.

The Lions Reserves will face reigning QAFL premiers Morningside in their second practice match of the pre-season at Giffin Park, Coorparoo this Saturday 13 March at 6pm.
