BRISBANE Lions vice-captain Tom Rockliff has declared "it's payback time," with the Lions treating Saturday night's Q-Clash against the Gold Coast like a Grand Final.

The Suns stunned their big brothers in the first version of the Queensland derby in May, winning by eight points, and Rockliff said a repeat result would be a disaster for the Lions.

The teams sit 15th and 16th on the ladder, with only the Lions' superior percentage keeping them above the Suns.

Rockliff did not mince words on Monday when he spoke of the importance of the match.

"It's massive for our footy club," he said.

"They got the wood on us the first time so it's definitely payback time this time around.

"It's our biggest game of the year now. It's probably our Grand Final.

"We can't go out there and give them two [wins] over us going into next year because that's the worst thing for our footy club, and we need to stamp our authority on the state and show who is the big brother and who dominates this state AFL-wise."

Prior to the first time the teams met, both clubs lobbed grenades that are still ringing around Queensland.

Simon Black called former teammates Jared Brennan and Michael Rischitelli "mercenaries" for heading to the Suns, while Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna said his club was now fixing the "mess" left behind when the Brisbane Bears played from Carrara in the 1980s and '90s.

Rockliff denied the Lions took their opponents lightly last time.

"I think they played really good footy and got six or seven goals up early and that puts you on the back foot," he said.

"This week we'll be going out there right from the start and we won't give them that chance to get away on us.

"I won't be sending any shots out to them. Good luck to them and I'll see them Saturday night."

With 34 disposals against Adelaide on Sunday, Rockliff was clearly the Lions' best player in the heartbreaking five-point loss.

He said it was disappointing to continue getting into winning positions, only to surrender in the fourth quarter.

"We're definitely working on that and the main goal for us over the next four weeks is to play the full four quarters and run over teams. We get teams into a position where we want them and we can't finish them, we can't knock them out," he said.

"We've forgotten how to win a little bit I suppose. We haven't won for a while. I think if we get that winning feeling, and we've been competitive and we're going out there to win every week, and can get one, hopefully we can get a couple in a row."
