A new start.
That's exactly what QClash 13 was for the Brisbane Lions in Round 1 this year.
Under new Senior Coach Chris Fagan, the Lions entered the Queensland derby as underdogs against a new-look Gold Coast SUNS outfit.
The first 20 minutes of the clash at Metricon Stadium were extremely memorable as the Lions slammed on seven unanswered goals in a quick and attacking brand of footy.
The Lions could do no wrong and built a handy lead of 46 points at half time.
Spurred on by their home fans and no doubt a healthy spray at the break, the SUNS came out firing and kicked eight goals in the third quarter to reduce the margin to 17 points.
The tired Lions looked like being overrun, especially when the SUNS drew even on the scoreboard midway through the last quarter.
Lewy Taylor snapped a late goal to give the Lions some breathing space, and despite a late response from SUNS forward Tom Lynch, they were able to hang on for an exhilarating two-point victory, 15.8 (98) to 14.12 (96).
In his first match as Captain, Dayne Beams won the Marcus Ashcroft Medal as best afield, while Tom Rockliff, Dayne Zorko, Ryan Bastinac and Stefan Martin also had huge matches.
