Three-time premiership hero Alastair Lynch’s name is already immortalised at the Brisbane Lions.

Not only was Lynch of the 17 inaugural inductees into the Lions’ Hall of Fame in 2012, but the trophy for third place at the annual Club Champion dinner is also named in his honour.

Now he’s being recognised by his former home state of Tasmania, by lending his name to the Tasmanian State League best and fairest award.

The ‘Alastair Lynch Medal’ will replace the former ‘Tassie Medal’ from 2014 and beyond.

It is the second time there has been an Alastair Lynch Medal, with the original honouring the best and fairest of the now-defunct Devils VFL side.

Lynch grew up in the Burnie-Wynyard area, did part of his schooling in Launceston and played senior football in Hobart, giving him wide appeal across all of Tasmania’s football regions.

An AFL journeyman who remains one of only two players in history to have represented all of Fitzroy, the Bears, and the Brisbane Lions, Lynch remains proud of his Tasmanian origins and was delighted with this latest recognition.

“I live in Queensland now but most people know I’m still a passionate Tasmanian,” Lynch said.

“It is a huge honour to represent that group of players, to have that named after me and to have the support of the clubs.

“I’m very proud of Tasmanian football over the years and even now watching the juniors coming through junior ranks in Tassie and the progression into the AFL.”

The Lions themselves have long had a strong connection with Tasmania, with Fitzroy the early pioneers in playing home matches at Hobart.

A host of Tasmania talent has also featured at the Gabba – with Josh Green and Ryan Harwood the currently-listed players who are proud to call the Apple Isle home, while Alastair Lynch’s brother, Manny, remains a key figure in the Lions’ football department.
