2014 Draft: The Verdict
Read what the experts said about the Lions' performance at the 2014 Draft
There's a reason why every year recruiters comment on how they feel they got a 'bargain' with some picks - and that's because each of them rate players differently.
It's what makes the Draft so fascinating, and ensures that every pick could potentially be a winner.
The Lions approached the 2014 AFL Draft knowing they weren't going to secure any 'top-end' talent - considering their first pick wasn't until 65 - but come away with a firm belief that each of the players they drafted could play a valuable role for the senior team.
Although the exact success of this Draft can't be judged for at least another three seasons, please find below summaries from some of the resident Draft experts.
Brisbane Lions Recruiting Manager Stephen Conole
"We went into (the Draft) knowing we had the two Academy boys (Liam Dawson and Harris Andrews) and our Father-Son (Josh Clayton), so we already had some nice value through those selections. It was a bonus to get a couple of boys at the back-end who we think can play a role in the team."
AFL.com.au Draft expert Callum Twomey
"As expected, the Lions found two taller defenders to build their stocks in that area. Tasmanian pair Josh McGuinness and Josh Watts were value picks late in the draft when the Lions entered proceedings, while Jaden McGrath will add some creativity. Having another tall in Harris Andrews and rebounder Liam Dawson already sewn up through the academy bidding system gave them a nice platform to build from."
Herald Sun Draft expert Sam Landsberger
"The Lions’ academy picks — Liam Dawson and Harris Andrews — were nabbed later than their market value. Defender Josh McGuinness looks a nice late selection with his under-18 numbers for Tasmania similar to Gold Coast’s Kade Kolodjashnij."
