Relive Fitzroy’s last win
Fitzroy's last AFL win will be shown on Fox Footy on Tuesday night at 8:30pm
Fitzroy 31-point victory over Fremantle at the Whitten Oval in Round 8 of 1996 will be broadcast in its entirety from 8:30pm (Brisbane/Melbourne time).
For the old Fitzroy faithful, it presents a great opportunity to relive that memorable afternoon, while ‘newer’ Lions fans will be able to witness an important moment in the Club’s history.
Led by full-forward Anthony Mellington, who booted a game-high six goals, the Roys led at every change to break a 21-match losing streak.
But the man-of-the-match, as voted by the umpires, was none other than recent Lions Hall of Fame inductee, Chris Johnson.
In just his third season in the AFL, a baby-faced Johnson collected 24 disposals and kicked three goals in a blistering third term to essentially break the game open.
The win might have only been the seventh time in 59 matches that Johnson had enjoyed the spoils of success at Fitzroy – however he would famously go on to be part of three Lions premiership sides over the next decade.
Other familiar faces in Fitzroy’s team at the time included Captain Brad Boyd, John Barker, Jarrod Molloy, Martin Pike, and Matthew Primus.
So tune in to Fox Footy at 8:30pm tonight (Tuesday 10 June) to watch Fitzroy’s last ever win in the AFL against Fremantle.
