After a tough slog in slippery conditions at the Gabba last Saturday night, an eight-day break is just what the doctor ordered for the Brisbane Lions.
With a flight to Melbourne part of the team’s itinerary ahead of their Round 19 match against the Demons, Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton says the extra day should help the players’ recovery.
“Our training stays the same from Tuesday to Thursday. Our final session will just be on a Saturday, rather than a Friday,” Burton told LionsTV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.
“We’ll be able to do a little bit more later in the week, but for the main it’s just extra recovery.”
Two players who should benefit from the eight-day break are Sam Mayes and Ash McGrath – both of whom copped heavy knocks against the Suns.
Mayes was subbed out of the game late in third term with a mild concussion, while McGrath played on after suffering a cut head early in the game.
“Both those guys pulled up pretty well,” Burton said.
“Maysey will do his testing this week, but early indications are he should be fine.”
Meanwhile, Tom Cutler is a chance to return through the NEAFL after spending a month on the sidelines with a groin strain.
Matthew Leuenberger is also expected to play greater minutes with the Reserves in Sydney on Friday, in a bid to regain valuable match fitness.
