Gold Coast Captain Gary Ablett is widely recognised as the AFL’s best player – some even argue that he is the greatest to have ever played the game.
So his absence will certainly be felt to some extent by the Suns on their quest towards a maiden AFL Finals berth.
However, it’s fair to say Ablett won’t be missed by too many Brisbane Lions fans this Saturday night at the Gabba.
It’s no surprise that the ‘little master’ boasts the best disposal average (30.5 per game) in the QClash’s short history, and is the only player to have taken home multiple Marcus Ashcroft Medals as best afield.
His devastating performance back in Round 3 – where he collected 38 possessions, laid 10 tackles, and kicked three goals – will still be firmly in the minds of Lions players, coaches and fans.
But Lions Assistant Coach Simon Black says the Suns are far from being a one-man band, and have plenty of options to cover their injured skipper.
“They’re starting to mature and develop as a team and there are individuals in that team that have taken a step this year,” Black said.
“There’s been talk about whether they can win without Gary – they’re clearly going to be able to win without him.
“They’ve got some fantastic players in that team and they’re maturing all the time.”
Black also believes that regardless of whether it’s this year or next, “it’s only a matter of time” before the Lions’ cross-town rivals feature in September.
“We know what a powerhouse they’re going to be, and it’s a really big challenge for our group to try and beat them on our home deck,” he said.
“They’re going to be a very good side for a long time.”
Suns more than just Ablett
