Much like the Bye earlier in the year, the Split Round provides an opportunity for players from all clubs to take stock and reload for the final stretch of the season.

With no match scheduled for this weekend, the Brisbane Lions took the opportunity to head up the Sunshine Coast to Noosa for a one-night escape.

Although there were plenty of training elements involved in the getaway, Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton said the change in environment was largely designed to help the team mentally.

“Obviously it’s a Bye weekend, so we wanted to get a different environment for the boys to give them a mental break, as well as a physical break,” Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“It’s good to come up here (to Noosa) and spend some time with the coaching staff and the playing group and just get away from the normal training environment.”

Burton also revealed that Claye Beams had not aggravated an injury, despite being subbed off during last Saturday’s match against West Coast, and that Matthew Leuenberger was poised to return before the end of the season.

“Nah, (Beams is) fine. There are no injury concerns. He iced his knee…but that’s just a maintenance thing,” Burton said.

“Leuey is going OK. We expect him to be back in Round 19-20, and Beamer (Brent Moloney) is on the same track as well.”

Tom Cutler should also be ready to resume playing not long after the Bye, while Patrick Wearden is still a month away with his quad injury.
