In the lead-up to the Brisbane Lions’ Round 9 match against North Melbourne, lions.com.au highlighted the Club’s unenviable recent record at Etihad Stadium.
Unfortunately that record has worsened following a heavy 87-point loss to the Kangaroos.
The Lions have now lost nine of their past 11 games at the Docklands venue by an average margin of 58 points – and that’s not including the triple figure NAB Challenge defeat at the hands of Hawthorn during the pre-season.
In fact, the combined margin from their two visits to Etihad Stadium in 2014 (including the Hawks game) is 218 points – or 109 points per game.
There is no apparent ‘hoodoo’ either, as the Lions have proven they can win at Etihad Stadium with stirring victories over Essendon and the Western Bulldogs in recent seasons.
Assistant Coach Shane Woewodin says the venue is unique in a sense, but also believes a lot of the reason has to do with the team’s ‘attitude’ when they travel down to Melbourne.
“We’ve got to go down with the right attitude – a better attitude than we have in the past when we’ve gone down to Victoria,” Woewodin told LIONS TV as part of the Vero Coaches’ Wrap.
“(Etihad Stadium) is a quick deck, and we’re up against a quality contested footy team (in the Western Bulldogs).
“We need to take the crowd out of it really early by getting off to a great start, and then play consistent footy for 120 minutes.”
Attitude the answer
