Brisbane Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger has been given the ‘all clear’ after nursing an ankle injury throughout Sunday’s match against Geelong at the Gabba.
Leuenberger twisted his ankle midway through the team’s final training session on Saturday, and hobbled to the sideline for urgent medical attention.
Fortunately it wasn’t anything serious, and he was passed fit to take his place against the Cats.
The news from Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton was even better in the days following the Geelong match.
“Leuey’s fine, he pulled up really well – probably better than we thought he would,” Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.
“When you take an injury like that into a game, sometimes the ankle can get a bit irritated and get a bit of fluid in it, but fortunately for him, he came through no worries.”
Ryan Harwood also surprised Lions fans when he lined up with the reserves side on Sunday afternoon after originally being declared unfit to play when the senior team was announced on Thursday.
The Lions’ team list listed Harwood as missing with a shoulder injury, however it turned out to be less severe than first thought.
“After the main (training) session, we thought he would have missed,” Burton said.
“Those shoulders can be a bit funny sometimes – you can get a ‘stinger’ where you lose movement, but then when it settles down you’re fine to go again.
“Literally another day and a half after that, he was back to normal.”
The news wasn’t as positive surrounding swingman Brent Staker, who is struggling to overcome a calf injury.
“Stakes has a tear in his tendon, and that’s giving us a bit of grief at the moment,” Burton said.
“He’s pretty slow going and I wouldn’t imagine he would be back until probably after the Bye.”
