The Brisbane Lions’ Match Committee will have plenty to discuss when they convene this afternoon to select the final team for Saturday’s match against Port Adelaide.

There will be at least three forced changes to the side that lost to the Gold Coast last Saturday, with Daniel Rich (knee), Josh Green (hamstring), and Daniel Merrett (suspension) already ruled out.

Should the Lions decide to replace Merrett with another tall defender, Matt Maguire could come into the frame, although ‘Goose’ has been playing predominantly forward of late.

Assistant Coach Murray Davis suggested earlier in the week that Darcy Gardiner could also be a chance to make his senior debut after some strong showings in the NEAFL.

Rookie Jordon Bourke is another who could be called upon with the Lions having a senior position available after Patrick Wearden was recently placed on the long term injury list.

However, the Lions may instead opt for a shorter defensive line, and rely on Justin Clarke, Jordan Lisle and Joel Patfull to keep Port’s big men at bay.

After kicking three goals with the Lions Reserves last week, Rohan Bewick will come under serious consideration to fill the hole left by Green up forward.

Bewick has the ability to play as a crumbing, leading, or high-marking forward, so provides some versatility to the Lions’ forward line.

Jackson Paine is another who could get his chance to line up in the maroon, blue and gold for the first time after booting five goals against the Gold Coast Reserves last weekend.

Shoulder surgery meant Paine had a limited first pre-season in Brisbane, but with valuable match practice under his belt in recent weeks, he could provide the team with another option in attack.

Draftees Nick Robertson and Tom Cutler might get their first taste of senior action after collecting 30 and 29 disposals respectively in the NEAFL last week, while Andrew Raines presents a ready-made option for the coaching staff.

Daniel Rich’s loss across half-back might open the door for one of Ryan Harwood and/or Jack Crisp to find their way back into the senior team.

So while Rich, Merrett and Green are all big losses, there are plenty of potential replacements waiting in the wings, ready for their chance to play against Port Adelaide.
