The Brisbane Lions’ only living Legend, Kevin Murray, credits his inclusion into the Club’s Hall of Fame as one of the highlights of his illustrious football career.

Murray was one of 17 inaugural inductees at the Lions’ first Hall of Fame event at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne back in 2012.

He was honoured further as one of only two official ‘Legends’ – along with Fitzroy’s triple Brownlow Medallist Haydn Bunton.

“It was one of the highlights of my whole career to be acknowledged in that regard,” Murray told lions.com.au.

“I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of good things come my way over a period of time, and to be Legend alongside the great Haydn Bunton is a wonderful feeling.

“It’s just a shame my Mum, Dad, and brother weren’t alive to see it, because they would have been thrilled to bits for me.”

Murray will be in Brisbane to witness for the second biennial Hall of Fame induction on Wednesday 21 May, but said he couldn’t begin to predict who might be deemed worthy this time around.

“It’s a very hard job for the people who select the members of the Hall of Fame,” Murray said.

“The Club’s history goes back more than 100 years, and people often forget that Fitzroy were dominant in the 20s and 30s – and you only get to read about the champions from that period, because even when I was a young footballer, I didn’t get to see them play.

“Then there’s the Bears, who also had some great players, and of course the mighty Brisbane Lions who won all those premierships.

“I know the selection process is incredibly hard and complicated, but I think those on the Committee are doing a terrific job.

However, Murray is expecting to be joined in the ultra-exclusive ‘Legends’ group in the not-too-distant future.

“Michael Voss and Simon Black will be made Legends of this Club at some stage – I’m positive of that,” he said.

In many respects, Murray’s unwavering support for the Lions post-merger helped a number of former old Fitzroy supporters follow the team to Brisbane.

The Lions have now existed as a merged entity for 18 years – but continually recognise the Club’s proud origins born from both Fitzroy and the Bears.

“Sometimes as a past player you can think that you’re gone and forgotten, but things like the Hall of Fame help celebrate those amazing achievements.

“From my point of view, Fitzroy was such a special club because our supporters never deserted us – and the same now goes for the Brisbane Lions.

“As for those Fitzroy people who didn’t follow the Lions after the merger, they have missed out on a lot of great moments in our Club’s history – including three flags.”

Join Kevin Murray and a host of other all-time greats at the Brisbane Exhibition & Convention Centre on Wednesday 21 May, when the Brisbane Lions reveal their 2014 Hall of Fame inductees.
