On the eve of his 150th AFL match, Lions defender-cum-forward Daniel Merrett has revealed that some of the most memorable moments of his 11-year career have come from the past two seasons.
Merrett will become the 20th player to notch up 150 games since the merged Club officially formed in 1997, and in the process will qualify for Lions Life Membership.
Upon reflection of his career, the 28-year-old didn’t have to look back too far to find his fondest memories.
“That Geelong win this year, that’s a once-in-a-career win. That stands out,” Merrett said.
“In the last couple of years we’ve had some awesome wins. We’ve had some pretty bad losses as well.
“But the wins definitely stand out – like West Coast last year, Geelong this year, Essendon this year.”
From a personal perspective, Merrett was also reminded about his personal best seven-goal haul against Greater Western Sydney last year – five of which came in a record-breaking opening quarter.
“Yeah, that was a bit of fun,” he said.
Originally recruited as a project player from the Gold Coast in 2002, Merrett watched from the sidelines as his new teammates secured an historic third straight AFL premiership in his debut season.
He witnessed the Club play off in another Grand Final the following season, before finally being afforded his first senior opportunity in Round 2 of 2005.
By then, the Lions’ remarkable period of success was coming to an end, which has meant that Merrett has had only limited exposure to September action.
His only two Finals matches came in 2009 when the Lions proceeded through to the Semi Finals.
The lure of future Finals is something that continually motivates the big Queenslander.
“Hopefully if I can hang around a few more years (we can experience more Finals),” he said.
“We’re headed that way, so I’ve got faith in the group.”
