Simon Black is still slowly adjusting to his new role as Assistant Coach after announcing his retirement last month and signing on in an off-field role with the Lions.
“It’s (retirement) starting to sink in after the last few weeks, very slowly,” Black told LionsTV
“Being back to training, not as a player, as a coach is something unusual as well.”
“I’m sure when the games start back in a few months time, I’m sure that’s when it will be really tough.”
Currently in Arizona with the rest of the Lions’ football department, Black is looking forward to his new role as forward line coach.
“I’m looking forward to working with a lot of our young guys,” Black said.
“We’ve got a fair few young guys in our group and I’ll be looking at trying to help their development and help them improve as players.”
The Brisbane games record holder spoke of the benefits of travelling to Arizona for pre-season, both for fitness as well as being an integral part of team bonding.
“To be able to come over to Arizona and train in the altitude together, it’s great for the bonding and connection of the group and everyone is working extremely hard,” Black said
“It’s some of the tougher running sessions I’ve been a part of and witnessed, so it’s been a really good week so far and all the guys are really enjoying it and hopefully we will see the benefits of the training in the months to come.”
The Lions are in Arizona until November 21.
