The heavily depleted Brisbane Lions can expect to be significantly bolstered in the coming weeks with a host of stars set to return from injury and suspension.
Tom Rockliff (quad), Mitch Golby (foot), Daniel Rich (shoulder), Matthew Leuenberger (thumb) and Matt Maguire (shin) will all undergo fitness tests to assess their availability to play this weekend, while book-ends Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett have one match to serve from their respective suspensions.
However, midfielder Brent Moloney remains is some doubt to face Fremantle after hurting his back during the team’s Round 10 clash with Collingwood.
Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton revealed that Rockliff and Golby were the players most likely to be given the green light for the trip to Perth.
“Mitch Golby and Tom Rockliff trained over the Bye weekend – obviously the guys in rehab don’t get the same break that the other boys do,” Burton told LIONS TV during the Bupa recovery Report.
“They trained well on Saturday and both will be available for selection this week.”
Meanwhile, Leuenberger, Rich and Maguire must prove they can cope with the physical pressure at training before being considered.
“They need to get through the main session (on Wednesday). That will determine whether they’re available this weekend,” Burton said.
“Richy’s obviously coming off that scapula injury and has been out for 7-8 weeks, so we just have to make sure that he’s comfortable with contact.
“Leuey’s a bit the same. He’s got a guard for his thumb and it’s just a matter of how he feels with that.”
