Full-back Daniel Merrett could become a more regular member of the Lions’ forward line following an impressive display against Gold Coast last Saturday.
Merrett kicked two goals playing as a stay-at-home forward after returning to the side ahead of schedule from a groin complaint.
“I was surprised that I got up in the end,” Merrett said during an exclusive interview with LIONS TV after Saturday’s match.
“I just got my recovery right and ended up training well all week.”
With Matt Maguire, Justin Clarke and Joel Patfull controlling the defensive half, Merrett was unleashed up forward alongside fellow ‘talls’ Jonathan Brown and Brent Staker.
The trio caused all sorts of headaches for the SUNS defenders, combining for eight goals from 10 marks inside 50m.
In fact, the Lions took 14 marks inside their forward 50m to Gold Coast’s six. It was the Club’s second highest amount for the season, behind their Round 5 tally of 20 against Melbourne.
Merrett, who played the majority of 2012 up forward, expects it might take him some time to re-familiarise himself with the complexities of the role.
“I haven’t been up there for a while, so I’m just getting used to playing next to the big fella (Brown) again,” Merrett said.
“I’ve just got to keep building that relationship and we’ve got to try not to get in each other’s road.
“We’re looking forward to North Melbourne next week. They’ve got a really strong defence so it will be a big test for us.”
Although Merrett isn’t recognised as a noted goal-kicker, having kicked just 45 goals in across his 145-game career, his ability to compete both in the air and at ground level often creates scoring opportunities for his teammates.
