Daniel Rich’s career-best 2012 season and standout NAB Cup campaign has seen him earn one of the greatest compliments in AFL – a heavy tag.
Rich is widely identified by opposition teams as the Lions’ most dangerous player, and as a result has been dealing with intense pressure during the Club’s opening two matches.
The 2012 Club Champion Runner-Up was held to a career-low eight disposals against the Western Bulldogs in Round One, and had limited influence against the Crows last Saturday at the Gabba.
He can expect much of the same this Saturday night against Gold Coast, with Rugby League convert Karmichael Hunt the man most likely to perform a run-with role.
“(Daniel Rich is) a class player and is definitely difficult to stop,” Hunt said at a joint media conference at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday.
“Hopefully this weekend, if I get the role on him, I’ll be able to do a good job.”
Rich has proven particularly damaging against the Suns throughout his career, averaging 24 disposals, seven tackles and three goals across his two QClashes.
Lions Co-Captain Jonathan Brown says it’s up to the rest of the Lions team to help Rich break the tag.
“Richy’s a prime target from opposition teams – especially with Blacky not being out there,” Brown said.
“I’m sure this week will be no different.”
“Even if he’s not getting tagged, we need the ball in Daniel Rich’s hands because he’s our main offensive weapon and probably the best kick in the team.”
Pearce Hanley – arguably the Lions’ best player against the Crows – believes the extra attention being directed towards Rich could free up some of his teammates to have a greater impact on games.
“With Richy getting sat on, it helps me and the likes of Zorko go under the radar a bit more,” Hanley said.
