LAST TIME THEY MET

After both suffering losses in Round 2 of the 2012 Season, the Brisbane Lions and Fremantle both came out firing when they meet in Round 3 at Paterson’s stadium.

In what was a low scoring, highly defensive game, Fremantle notched up their second win of the season, defeating the Lions by 29 points.

The Lions lead by 3 points at the first break, after a quarter of football that saw just 3 goals scored. An injury to ruckman, Matthew Leuenberger in the second term, left debutant Billy Longer with the near impossible task of battling one on one with Aaron Sandilands. Despite Longer’s efforts Sandilands finished the match with an incredible 54 hit outs and was instrumental in the Dockers victory.

The Lions trailed by just 16 points at the final break but with a record low of just 20 inside 50’s for the match the Lions were unable to make an impact on the scoreboard.

Brownlow Medal Votes: 3. T Mzungu (FRE), 2. C Pearce (FRE), 1. A Sandilands (FRE).

IMPENDING MILESTONES

Simon Black will play his 319th AFL game this weekend taking over Marcus Aschroft as the Brisbane AFL games record holder. In 2012 Black became the first player in VFL/AFL history to have played 300 games, won a Brownlow, been part of a Premiership, and won a Norm Smith Medal.  The club will celebrate this milestone at their next home game at the Gabba, in Round 13 against Geelong.

Joel Patfull will play his 150th AFL game this Sunday against Fremantle. Patfull, drafted as a ‘mature recruit’ in 2005 made his debut in Round 8 2006. He was the winner of the Club’s Best and Fairest award in 2012.

Ash McGrath is set to play his 200th in Round 13 when the Lions face Geelong at the Gabba. McGrath debuted in 2001 and was a member of the Brisbane Lions 2003 Premiership side.
