Brisbane Lions Co-Captain Jed Adcock revealed that some of his team’s inspired first half against the Western Bulldogs was fuelled by the disappointed from their previous encounter back in Round One encounter.
On that occasion, the red-hot Lions were humbled by the Bulldogs to the tune of 68-points, and the sizeable defeat had the Club on the back foot early in the season.
“We look back at Round One and think it might have cost us our year a little bit, so there was a bit of revenge there,” Adcock told LIONS TV in an exclusive post-game interview on Sunday.
“We were ready for this game.
“We knew they were going to come out hard early, so we had to jump. We kicked straight which really helped.”
The Lions led by 50 points at half time in what was clearly the Club’s best start to a match all season, however the second half was a completely different story.
The Lions have prided themselves on being strong finishers in 2013, but this time it was the Dogs who almost caused another remarkable comeback at the Gabba.
Fortunately for the home side, they were still able to come away with a tight seven-point victory.
“We went into our shells a little bit. We stopped taking the game on and didn’t use our numbers when we had them,” Adcock said of the team’s second half fade-out.
“We got smashed in contested footy in the second half and the ball was in there forward half for 75% of the time.
“We just couldn’t win the footy, and didn’t own it when we got it. They stepped up a bit, but we didn’t compose ourselves well enough.”
The Lions will now head to Geelong this Saturday afternoon to face the second-placed Cats at Simonds Stadium in what is likely to be the Club’s final match of the season.
Although the constant speculation surrounding Essendon suggests the door to the Finals might be ever-so-slightly ajar.
“We’ve got one week to go and you never know what might happen,” Adcock said.
