Zane Littlejohn says Matt Eagles is becoming the heart and soul of the NEAFL side after an inspiring performance in Sunday’s victory over the Gold Coast.

Eagles had 12 intercept possessions and was selfless in defence.

“Just his ability to work for his teammates was really pleasing,” Littlejohn told lions.com.au.

“When you’re seeing effort and determination like that from one of your players you’re very proud. You hope that he can continue to build that. He’s come from a long way back.”

Eagles battled some injuries in the pre-season and has only recently started playing the full match.

“We hope he can continue to build on that and who knows, knock on the door for a senior spot,” Littlejohn said.

The third quarter was the difference in the NEAFL’s side 47-point victory over the Suns. The Lions kicked seven goals to one.

“We had about nine or 10 inside 50s for eight scoring shots which is really pleasing when you’re having that efficiency inside your forward 50,” he said.

“It makes life a lot easier for our defenders and mids who are working their backsides off to get us the footy inside.”

This week the Lions take on the GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium in a curtain raiser before the Lions’ Senior side.
