At the beginning of the 21st century, the Gabba was considered the most feared venue in the AFL competition.

Fuelled by the voices of parochial Brisbane fans, the triple-premiership-winning Brisbane Lions side from that period were relentless in the pursuit of making their home stadium an impenetrable fortress for opposition teams.

That ‘aura’ might have diminished slightly since the Club’s heyday, but it’s gradually being rebuilt on the hard work of a new generation of Lion kings.

This Saturday night, the Lions will be aiming for their fourth successive home victory when they host St Kilda at the Gabba - a feat that hasn’t been achieved in more than two years.

Overwhelming crowd support has already helped the emerging Lions side get over the line against Greater Western Sydney, West Coast and Melbourne in recent times, and Assistant Coach Gary O’Donnell believes they could again play a huge role in potentially overcoming the Finals-bound Saints.

“We’ve had a bit of success lately at the Gabba, and are starting to build a bit of a cauldron or fortress-type situation here again,” O’Donnell said.

“One thing we’re aiming to do again this week is to consolidate that form and make it hard for opposition teams who are travelling up here.”

Brisbane-based members and supporters are being encouraged to create a sea of maroon, blue and gold at the Club’s first Saturday night home game in almost two months.

“We need to make it really difficult and uncomfortable for teams at the Gabba,” O’Donnell said.

Victorian-based Lions fans will also be able to lend their voice to the cause by attending a special big screen viewing of the Round 15 clash at The Oxford Scholar Hotel - located at 427 Swanston Street in Melbourne’s CBD (opposite RMIT).

The family friendly event will include a range of FREE Lions activities (during the breaks in the game of course) including a trivia competition where one lucky fan will go home with a major prize!
