And as he becomes settled and comfortable in the Lions defence, Ryan Lester is transforming into Mr Reliable.
There’s an argument the 27-year-old is in career best form.
Known for his understated manner, Lester wasn’t about to go that far but he did admit to satisfaction at the way he has played since coming into the side for round two.
“I’ve been happy with the way I’ve played the last few weeks,’’ he said.
“I think I’m starting to go for my marks a little bit more and I think that’s a strength of mine I probably haven’t utilized enough.
“I guess feel really comfortable Obviously playing alongside Harris Andrews he’s the best, or one of the best defenders in the competition that gives you a lot of confidence, and there’s Dizz as well.
“So I’m happy with how I’m going but I have to keep performing, keep producing that week in and week because there is plenty of guys putting their hands up as well.
“So I’m very happy to be in team and hopefully I can stay in there and keep contributing.’’
Lester has played just about every position in his 129 AFL games and the Roar Deal boys wondered if being forced to prepare for a variety of roles, sometimes from week to week, had worked against him.
“To be honest I think it has probably worked in my favour realistically because there’s been plenty of times I got a game because I’m am versatile,’’ he said.
“We’ve had times, for a few years there we had been a lot of injuries, and I’ve been able to slot in and number of different positions, so it has probably worked in my favour. ‘’
However, he admits he reached a point where he wanted to settle into a position.
He thought the ability to train and study a role could lead to improvement.
It was a bold move because it had the potential to cost him games, and as the Lions went through a blessed run with injuries last year, he spent plenty of time out of the side.
“About 18 months ago I spoke with Fages and David Noble and said, right I’m at the point of my career where I need to decide where I want to play and make a position my own and not be the guy who can be put here or there or pulled out,’’ he said.
“I thought defence was my best option.
“I don’t feel like I accumulated enough of the ball as a midfielder so that’s where I settled.
“I played a few games last year but we were winning and we had no injuries and Marcus and the all the boys down there were playing well.
“I’m comfortable with where I am now and I think even though it is ten years in now for me, I’m still improving a lot.’’
