The dynamic dozen from the Suncoast Lions destroyed Labrador in the first half of their Round 10 clash at Beenleigh’s Dauth Park today, before the Tigers fought back to put some respectability into the scoreline.

While the Lions fielded just 12 senior players, the same number with which they were beaten at Redland a month ago, they tore the Tigers apart in the opening half.

Robert Copeland was sensational in the opening term, as was Scott Clouston, the duo kicking four goals each as Suncoast surged to a 9.2-1.2 quarter-time lead.

The duo were too strong on the lead and in the one-on-one contests.

Clouston gave the crowd something to remember when he roosted a goal from 65m out as everything went right for the Lions.

Midfielder Bradd Dalziell was prolific in the opening term and kicked the other goal, then proceeded to boot the first three of the second quarter as Suncoast’s first 12 goals came from just three players.

The Lions shared the scoring around from there, leading 14.9-2.3 at halftime, and eventually winning 19.14 (128)-13.11 (89).

Copeland spent some time at halfback in the second half, where he continued to dominate, before heading back to the forward line and booting another three majors to take his haul to seven for the day.

James Hawksley and Chris Schmidt were outstanding in the midfield, generating much of the drive for the Suncoast, while Pat Garner built his form with a strong display in defence.

Daniel Dzufer gave his side great penetration with his run and deft footpassing, while Phil Smith showed a willingness to take on the opposition and run the ball.

The dogged Mark Reilly tagged Albert Proud from the outset and while Proud did plenty of good things, he was not quite as dominant as in recent weeks.

Aaron Shattock was typically solid and gave his side a contest throughout the game, while Mathew Clarke was another who tried his best against the odds for most of the day.

Matt Dillon was solid in the midfield and chipped in with two goals, while Corey Munson booted all three of his goals in a lively third term which gave his team a lift.

Michael Talbot was the Tigers’ best midfielder in his strongest display of the season, while Josh Woods also tried hard.

Labrador weren’t helped by the loss of outstanding utility Justin Maddern before the game.

Maddern, one of the few Queensland players who looked like he belonged in the pressure cooker heat of interstate football last weekend, drove a nail through his hand at work on Friday and is having scans tomorrow to determine the extent of the damage.

It was a free-flowing contest at Beenleigh, which kept the big crowd entertained.

The pristine playing surface assisted skills and it was a good promotion for the league, who has to find one neutral venue for every team this season due to the extra round of fixtures and being fair so all clubs have the same number of home games.
